Academic Excellence
Nottingham is home to two leading universities and over 60,000 students (42,000 full time students) meaning that local business have access to a large number of skilled graduates.
The two universities are also closely linked with business and industry. They are home to many research and career centres in areas including biosciences, chemistry, financial services, law and ICT amongst others.The University of Nottingham have recently opened a campus in Ningbo, China meaning that the University is not just a leading university in the UK but is gaining a reputation as a leading global learning establishment. Ranked 70th in the world by the Times Higher Education Supplement and awarded University of the Year in 2006, the University of Nottingham has reached a new record for research awards received - exceeding £125 million for the first time. The University is consistently ranked in the top five UK universities for the Value of Industrial awards, hosting three research centres, two with Rolls Royce and one with GE Aviation. Its main subject strengths are in Languages, Biosciences, Law and Psychology meaning that there is a wide range of graduate specialties within the Nottingham
workforce.
Nottingham Trent University is also seen as one the UK's leading universities in terms of graduate employability with almost 98 percent of students graduating in 2005 employed or engaged in further within six months. The University specialises in Law, Social Sciences and Art and Design. With leading research centres in Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Physics and Sports Science, the University has a flourishing research culture with funding from sources as US Department for Homeland Security to the Anthony Nolan Trust. The University's John Van Geest Cancer Research Centre, specialising in cancer detection and technologies, will cement its reputation within the cancer research field, with the help of a £7.65 million donation.
Nottingham's schools are improving faster than the national average. There are 120 schools across Nottingham and an investment of £135 million will improve and enhance learning opportunities. The Government has invested £89 million in Nottingham through the Building Schools for the Future initiative to improve local secondary and special schools.
