Masters of the universe: Art and design graduates from 18 nations prepare for MA exposition
1 July 2010Postgraduate students from an impressive 18 countries will be given the chance to showcase their development as creative professionals and global design citizens during this year's MA art and design exposition at Nottingham Trent University.
Maximum Expo 2010, which runs from 16-24 July, will feature the work of almost 130 Masters students across a diverse range of art and design practice.
Work will include fine and decorative arts, fashion, knitwear and textiles, photography, graphics, multimedia and product design. The exposition, which is open to the public and free to attend, will be staged in the Bonington building, a purpose-built centre for creativity and home to the University's School of Art and Design.
The vast international contribution to this year's event, and the level of expertise on show, is expected to reinforce the School's reputation as an interdisciplinary, international community. Talented students - from countries including China, Taiwan, Japan, India, Nigeria, Finland, Spain, Greece, Denmark and the United States - will be given the platform to demonstrate the depth, research and understanding they have achieved.
This year's showcase includes a textile design and innovation project which looks at how glass can be used within knitted textiles to create a new composite textile, and illustration which investigates Obsessive Compulsive Disorder through the use of visual narratives.
A branding and identity design student, meanwhile, has attempted to create a brand for Bhangra music while looking at ways of implementing it into the music industry, and a fashion business postgraduate has investigated and compared the ethical fashion markets in India and the UK. The development of a fictional Taiwanese superhero is the work of one motion graphic design student, and has involved the creation of character and myth in a bid to provoke a sense of national cultural identity for indigenous Taiwanese people.
The head of postgraduate art and design courses at Nottingham Trent University, Carol Jones, said: "Maximum Expo 2010 looks like being one of our most impressive expositions of Masters' work ever. There will be a wide range of dynamic and exciting work with a strong emphasis on creative approaches to contemporary practice, research questions, practical outcomes and theories."
