Nottingham Contemporary wins top award

20 May 2010

Nottingham Contemporary has won a top architectural award and has put the city on the map, say top judges.

The new centre for contemporary art built on the edge of the historic Lace Market, has won a Royal Institute of British Architects national award.

Nottingham City Council and the architects, London-based Caruso St John, were praised by RIBA's jury for creating a gallery with a presence that allows it to compete on an international scale.

The jury said: "Indeed, the city council credit their new building with a resurgence of confidence in the city, and say that it has given them more than they could have hoped for or imagined. In short, it's put Nottingham on the map."

RIBA Awards are presented annually to the best new buildings.

The gallery is now eligible for the coveted RIBA Stirling Prize, awarded live on Channel 4 to the architects of the building that has made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year.
