City looking forward to arts festival

17 September 2009 Organisers are confident Nottingham can put on a top-class show when it stages the World Exhibition Event for Young Artists in 2012.

Delegates from the city visited Skopje in Macedonia to learn from the European version of the event, which showcases the talent of young artists and performers.
Stephanie Sirr, chief executive of Nottingham Playhouse, said: "We saw some brilliant work and it was an eye-opening experience.

"We went thinking in terms of what Nottingham could do and it's brilliant to think what we could stage in a big city.
"It's a valuable opportunity for people to learn about other cultures."

Artists from all over the world will head to Nottingham shortly after the close of the Olympics.
Venues include Nottingham Playhouse, Nottingham Contemporary, Broadway, New Art Exchange, Nottingham Castle, the Royal Centre and Trent FM Arena.
More informal spaces will play a part.

Ms Sirr said: "In Skopje one of our great UK musicians performed in a museum among the dusty old artifacts. It was wonderful. There were around 70 people but that had as much value as something held in a great big opera house."
A theatre venue such as the Playhouse could house visual art.

It was announced earlier this month that Nottingham would hold the first World Exhibition Event for Young People open to artists aged 18 to 30.

Sukhy Johal, interim director of culture and creative economy at Nottingham City Council, who helped put the bid together, said the event would benefit local people.
He said: "We'll be using public spaces like Old Market Square to bring the city to life and allow people to see artists in a different way. The world's media will be in London at the Olympics and we can attract them to a huge event in Nottingham."

Visual artist and performer Hetain Patel, 28, from Bulwell, believes visiting the European-wide event, known as the Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean Arts Festival, last year had allowed him to become more creative.
He said: "It was an inspiring experience meeting artists from different cultures.'
